Maldives Minister to Visit India

Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer has revealed his plans for an official visit to India, which is scheduled to take place from May 8th to May 10th. This visit comes at a time when the relationship between the two countries is experiencing some tension.

The Maldivian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the Minister, during his trip to India, will have a meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. They will engage in discussions to further strengthen the longstanding partnership between India and the Maldives.

The release mentioned that His Excellency Moosa Zameer, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, will be embarking on an Official Visit to India from 8 to 10 May 2024.

Minister Zameer’s visit will involve a meeting with India’s Minister of External Affairs, Dr S. Jaishankar, where they will engage in discussions aimed at strengthening and broadening the enduring partnership between the Maldives and India, as stated in the announcement.

It’s worth mentioning that Foreign Minister Zameer’s upcoming trip to India will mark his first official visit since taking up his position. This visit is particularly significant as India has recently announced its plans to withdraw its military personnel from Maldives by May 10.

The 4th meeting of the bilateral High-Level Core Group between India and Maldives took place on May 3. During the meeting, they discussed the plan to replace Indian military personnel from the Island nation by May 10. It was agreed that the government will ensure the replacement is completed before the mentioned deadline.

The government of the Maldives, headed by Mohamed Muizzu, has made a formal plea to India, asking them to pull out their troops from Male.

The press release mentioned that both parties were pleased to acknowledge that the Indian Government will be replacing military personnel at the final aviation platform by May 10. It was also stated that all the necessary logistical preparations are progressing as planned.
