Dublin – New York Portal

The Dublin City Council has decided to temporarily shut down a portal that linked New York City to Dublin through a livestream because of inappropriate behavior.

Barely a week had passed since the 24/7 visual art installation was installed, and already officials have chosen to close it down temporarily. The reason? Some individuals decided it was a good idea to flash each other and grind on the portal, while one person shockingly shared pictures of the twin tower attack with people in New York City. However, it’s not all bad news. The portal also served as a venue for heartwarming reunions with old friends and even witnessed a romantic proposal. Numerous people took to social media to document their encounters with this unique installation.

The Dublin City Council stated that while the number of individuals engaging in inappropriate behavior was small, videos capturing such behavior quickly gained popularity online.

The council mentioned in a statement on Monday that although we can’t control all of these actions, we’re working on implementing certain technical solutions to tackle this issue. These solutions will be put into action within the next 24 hours. We’ll also be closely monitoring the situation in collaboration with our partners in New York to ensure that portals continue to provide a positive experience for both cities and the world.

The portal for New York City is situated next to the Flatiron Building, while Dublin’s portal is positioned at the heart of North Earl Street and O’Connell Street.

What is this Portal all about?

On May 8th, the portal was unveiled as a means to unite individuals through the power of technology.

Benediktas Gylys, the Lithuanian artist and founder of The Portal, believes that portals are a way to connect people across borders and differences, giving us a true glimpse of our united world. Through livestreaming, these portals create a window between distant locations, enabling individuals to meet beyond their social circles and cultures. It’s a beautiful way to transcend geographical boundaries and embrace the interconnectedness of our global community.

The Dublin City Council announced on May 8 that the Dublin portal will soon link up with various cities and destinations in Poland, Brazil, and Lithuania. The connection with New York City will continue until autumn, and there will be exciting cultural performances starting in mid-May.
