T20 World Cup : Is Ricky Ponting the new Indian Cricket Coach?

During the IPL, the Australian cricket icon was approached to see if he would be keen on filling the coaching position for India once Rahul Dravid steps down.

The former Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting mentioned that he was approached not long ago to potentially step in as India’s new head coach following Rahul Dravid.

The Indian Premier League witnessed Ponting’s seventh season as the coach of the Delhi Capitals come to an end. This year’s tournament brought a blend of success and disappointment for the former Australian captain, as his team narrowly missed out on securing a spot in the playoffs.

Ponting has coached in the IPL for Mumbai and Delhi, and even served as Australia’s national T20I coach on a temporary basis. However, he has not yet decided to take on the demanding role of coaching a top national team permanently.

T20 World Cup : Is Dravid’s time as India’s head coach seemingly coming to an end?

Dravid’s tenure as India’s head coach appears to be nearing its end, and the team, who finished as runners-up in last year’s ICC World Test Championship, is now searching for a new leader. Ponting is one of the many legendary players who have been approached for the position.

Ponting mentioned to the ICC that he has come across numerous reports regarding it. Usually, these things surface on social media before you even realize, but during the IPL, there were a few private conversations to gauge my interest in participating.

The idea of becoming a senior coach for a national team is incredibly appealing to me. But, given the other responsibilities I have in my life and the need for some downtime at home, it becomes a challenging choice. It’s common knowledge that working with the Indian team means not being able to be a part of an IPL team, which further complicates things.

The position of a national head coach demands a full-time dedication of 10 or 11 months annually. While I have a passion for it, it doesn’t suit my current lifestyle and the things I find most fulfilling.
